Gregg was a familiar name in electronics and appliance retailing for more than six decades. Founded in Princeton, Indiana, in 1955 by Henry Harold Gregg and his wife, Fansy, the company grew from a small appliance store into a major regional chain selling televisions, refrigerators, washers, computers, home theater equipment, and just about everything else that required an outlet.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eEventually headquartered in Indianapolis, hhgregg expanded aggressively across the Midwest, South, and East Coast. At its peak, the company operated hundreds of stores across more than 20 states and generated nearly $2 billion in annual revenue. Its bright red-and-black branding became especially familiar in the 2000s as the chain tried to compete with Best Buy, big-box retailers, and a rapidly growing world of online shopping.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe expansion didn’t age particularly well. After years of declining sales, hhgregg filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in March 2017. Plans to reorganize ultimately gave way to liquidation, and all 220 remaining stores were closed that year. The original retail chain was gone, although the hhgregg name was later purchased out of bankruptcy and relaunched as an online retailer.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSixty-two years of selling televisions and refrigerators — ultimately defeated by the one appliance it couldn’t fit in the showroom: the internet.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOur H.
