Eleven newly independent former French colonies supplied most of the original capital, while Air France and UAT each held 17 percent. Operations began on 1 August 1961 with leased DC-4 aircraft, and long-haul service followed that October. Boeing 707s entered intercontinental service in January 1962, followed by DC-8s, Caravelles, DC-10s, Airbus aircraft and Boeing types. UAT merged with TAI to form UTA in 1963; Air France later became UTA's controlling shareholder in 1990. Air Afrique served African, European and North American destinations, but financial difficulties deepened from the 1980s. It ceased operations in January 2002 and was declared bankrupt on 7 February 2002.
