Air Afrique later operated aircraft including DC-8s, Caravelles, DC-10s, Airbus A300s and A310s, linking African cities with Europe and New York. Financial difficulties deepened from the 1980s. Air France acquired UTA's stake in 1990 and became the major shareholder in 2001. Air Afrique ceased operations in January 2002, was declared bankrupt on 7 February 2002, and most of its routes were taken over by Air France.
