It was spun off from DHL, with a majority stake sold to a private investor to meet federal foreign-ownership requirements. After FedEx and UPS questioned DHL Airways’ U.S. citizenship and operational control, the company adopted the DHL Airways name on December 22, 1981, and expanded services to Asia and Australia. In July 2003, John Dasburg completed a management buyout; the airline took the ASTAR Air Cargo name on June 30. DHL and the United States Air Force were its two target customers. DHL acquired minority nonvoting and voting stakes in 2007 and gained a board seat.
