Its main line ran from Richmond to south of Tampa, while the wider network reached Florida, Georgia, and Alabama. ACL developed major Florida-bound passenger service and upgraded its railroad through the mid-1950s. It retired its last steam locomotive in 1955 and moved headquarters from Wilmington to Jacksonville in 1956. On July 1, 1967, ACL merged with Seaboard Air Line Railroad to create Seaboard Coast Line Railroad.
