ARCO acquired Sinclair Oil in 1969 and unified its service brands under ARCO. The company discovered Prudhoe Bay Oil Field with Exxon in 1968 and opened its first ampm convenience store in Southern California in 1978. ARCO acquired Anaconda Copper Mining Company in 1977, spun off ARCO Chemical in 1987, and sold ARCO Solar to Siemens in 1990. BP acquired ARCO in 2000, with ARCO Alaska sold to Phillips Petroleum and ARCO Pipe Line Company acquired by TEPPCO. In 2012 and 2013, BP sold the Carson refinery, ARCO brand ownership, and specified western assets to Tesoro.
