The flagship, known for entrances on both streets and a spiraling atrium, operated until September 6, 1972, when it closed to make way for the Kentucky International Convention Center. Bacon's sons sold the store in 1903 to New York City-based H.B. Claflin \u0026amp; Company, owner of Stewart Dry Goods. After Claflin's 1914 bankruptcy, Ohio-based Mercantile Stores acquired Bacon's. Expansion included St. Matthews in 1953, Shively in 1956, Bashford Manor Mall in 1972, Owensboro in 1977, Louisville Galleria in 1982, and Mall St. Matthews in 1988.
