Founded in November 1934, the independent department store began in downtown Muncie, in the former W.A. McNaughton Company Building at Charles and Walnut streets. Its story later reached University Avenue and Muncie Mall, reflecting changing local shopping habits. This backpack connects everyday outings with a distinctive chapter in the city’s department-store past and makes a thoughtful choice for local-history enthusiasts.

Ball Stores was a department store chain based in Muncie, Indiana, founded in November 1934. Its original downtown store occupied the former W.A. McNaughton Company Building at the corner of Charles and Walnut Street. The store operated independently and specialized in high-quality merchandise. In 1968, Ball Stores acquired Collegienne Shops, a retail outlet on University Avenue near Ball State University. In 1978, the chain opened a store in Muncie Mall. By the 1980s, Ball Stores was experiencing financial difficulties. The downtown location closed in 1986, followed by Collegienne Shops in 1988. The Muncie Mall store closed in 1990, ending the chain’s listed retail operations. The company’s history connects downtown Muncie department-store retail with later locations near the university and in a shopping mall. The supplied account identifies the former McNaughton building as the predecessor of Ball Stores and records its retail transitions from an independent downtown operation to additional local outlets before the closures.

A rugged, everyday 20L backpack designed for days that move fast and demand durability.
