Its Washington Branch opened in 1835, and the B\u0026amp;O right-of-way later carried the experimental telegraph line between Washington and Baltimore in 1844. During the Civil War, the railroad suffered extensive damage while serving as a vital Union connection. Afterward, it expanded through consolidations and connections into Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois. The Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad gained control in 1962; the B\u0026amp;O continued separate operations until its 1987 merger into the C\u0026amp;O, then a CSX subsidiary.
