Horse-drawn cars gave way to steam locomotives in 1831, following the 1830 demonstration of the Tom Thumb. The railroad pushed west through Harpers Ferry, Martinsburg, Cumberland, and Wheeling, reaching the Ohio River near Moundsville in 1852. Its Washington Branch opened in 1835, and the B\u0026amp;O right-of-way later carried the experimental telegraph line between Washington and Baltimore in 1844. During the Civil War, the railroad suffered extensive damage while serving as a vital Union connection. Afterward, it expanded through consolidations and connections into Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois. The Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad gained control in 1962; the B\u0026amp;O continued separate operations until its 1987 merger into the C\u0026amp;O, then a CSX subsidiary.
