Often called Business Express, BizEX, or BEX, the carrier grew through acquisitions, purchasing Pilgrim Airlines in February 1986; Pilgrim had previously acquired NewAir of New Haven. The transaction broadened access to New York and Washington, D.C. markets. Business Express later acquired Mall Airways in September 1989, adding Canadian routes to Toronto, Montreal, and Ottawa, and acquired Brockway Air turboprop equipment that December. It became an early Delta Connection carrier, later added a Northwest Airlink affiliation, and joined American programs as American Connection and then American Eagle. Its 1990s jet operations used BAe 146-200s and Avro RJ70s. AMR Eagle Holding announced its purchase of the airline in December 1998.
