chappells-spiral-notebook
Chappell's Spiral Notebook
GhostCorp Apparel - resurrecting iconic corporate ghosts.

Make room for notes and memories with a spiral notebook celebrating Chappell's, the Syracuse department store chain founded in 1896. As a family-owned retailer, it grew to serve communities across central and northern New York, becoming part of everyday shopping life for generations. Its history also captures a period of change: four stores closed during a 1992 reorganization, and the remaining six were sold to Bon-Ton in 1994. A thoughtful notebook for local-history enthusiasts, former shoppers, and collectors of regional retail stories.

Chappell's was a family-owned department store chain based in Syracuse, New York. The business opened in 1896 and continued for nearly a century, closing in 1994. At its peak, the chain operated ten stores across the Syracuse area and in Cortland, Watertown, and Massena. Its locations included a downtown Syracuse store and outlets in shopping centers across central and northern New York, among them Shop City Plaza, Carousel Center, Fingerlakes Mall, and Salmon Run Mall. In January 1992, the corporation filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. As part of its reorganization, four stores closed. Under pressure from creditors, chairman Charles A. Chappell Jr., a grandson of the founder, sold the company and its remaining six stores to Bon-Ton Stores in October 1994. The sale marked the end of Chappell's as an independent family-owned chain and its transition to new ownership. The company’s history reflects the growth of regional department-store retailing, the role of malls in its store network, and the financial pressures that reshaped the chain in its final years.

One Size

Height, in

8.00

Length, in

6.00

Thickness, in

0.60

Product features

- 118 ruled pages (59 sheets) of smooth 90gsm paper for clear, bleed-resistant writing

- 350gsm front and back covers with a printed front and dark grey back for durability

- Metal spiral binding that lays flat and allows easy page removal

- Interior document pocket on back cover for storing receipts, maps, or notes

- Compact size: 6" x 8" (15.2 x 20.3 cm) — portable and ride-ready

Care instructions

- Use a soft, clean and dry cloth to gently brush any dust or dirt off from the center of book outwards.
