Renamed the Milwaukee and Mississippi Railroad in 1850, it opened its first five-mile line between Milwaukee and Wauwatosa on November 20 that year, then reached Prairie du Chien on the Mississippi River in 1857. After receivership, its successors were combined in 1867 as the Milwaukee and St. Paul; the name changed to Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul Railway in 1874 after a Chicago extension opened in 1872. The railroad built its Pacific Extension to Seattle and Tacoma between 1906 and 1909 and adopted its final corporate name during reorganization in 1928. Its Hiawatha passenger trains became a defining part of its identity. Financial strain led to the end of Pacific Extension operations west of Miles City, Montana, in 1980.
