Reorganized as the Chicago Great Western in 1892, it grew into a multi-state carrier linking Chicago, Minneapolis, Omaha, and Kansas City. Oelwein, Iowa, became its headquarters and principal shop site, with construction completed there in 1899. Known as the Corn Belt Route, the company adopted diesel power across its system by 1950 and ended passenger operations on September 30, 1965. After years of merger discussions, it joined the Chicago and North Western Railway on July 1, 1968.
