Its system traced its origin to the Galena and Chicago Union Railroad, chartered in 1836 and operating from December 1848; the two merged on February 15, 1865. The railroad expanded through acquisitions including the Sioux City and Pacific, Fremont, Elkhorn and Missouri Valley, Milwaukee, Lake Shore and Western, Minneapolis and St. Louis, and Chicago Great Western. It leased the Omaha Road in 1957 and merged it in 1972. Employee ownership that year brought the Chicago and North Western Transportation Company name and the Employee Owned logo. After later restructurings, the original Chicago and North Western Railway name returned in 1994.
