The company began in Los Angeles in 1970 when Wilfred Schwartz turned part of a warehouse into a store, then grew into a major consumer electronics chain with locations across California, Texas, and Arizona. Its large Westminster store and the Fred R. Rated television campaign helped make Federated Group memorable to shoppers. A desk-friendly keepsake for former customers, collectors, and fans of American retail and advertising history.

Federated Group was an American consumer electronics retailer founded by Wilfred Schwartz in 1970. Schwartz began the business after buying a 25,000-square-foot warehouse in Los Angeles and converting part of it into a store. In 1976, the company closed two locations and built a 20,000-square-foot store in Westminster, California, described as a superstore because of its size. The chain later added stores and expanded rapidly after becoming publicly traded in 1984, including a major move into Texas. By December 1984 it operated 25 stores; by 1985, 40 stores across California, Texas, and Arizona. Its headquarters were in City of Commerce, California, and later Sunnyvale. Known for humorous television advertising featuring Shadoe Stevens as Fred R. Rated, Federated Group reached 67 stores by 1987, when it was the fourth-largest U.S. consumer electronics discounter. It was sold in 1987 for US$67.3 million. In 1989, 26 stores in Los Angeles and San Diego were sold to Silo; the remaining stores held liquidation sales and closed in 1990. The former Federated locations reopened under the Silo name that year. Silo later closed some of those stores in 1994 and shut all its locations after filing for bankruptcy in 1995.

9" × 8"

Width, in

9.00

Height, in

8.00

Depth, in

0.06

Product features

- Smooth, low-friction surface for effortless mouse movement

- Full-front color print with bright, accurate reproduction

- Ultra-thin 1/16" (1.58 mm) high-density foam core

- Non-slip rubber base that grips the desk

- Rectangular shape with one-sided print

Care instructions

- Use warm water and dish soap to clean spots off your pad.
