Founded in Los Angeles in 1970, the chain expanded from its first warehouse-based store to large-format locations in California, Texas, and Arizona. Its Fred R. Rated ads added a humorous voice to television, while later store transfers to Silo reflected the changing retail landscape. This vanity license plate design is a conversation-starting keepsake for collectors of regional brands and classic shopping history.

Federated Group was an American consumer electronics retailer founded by Wilfred Schwartz in 1970. Schwartz began the business after buying a 25,000-square-foot warehouse in Los Angeles and converting part of it into a store. In 1976, the company closed two locations and built a 20,000-square-foot store in Westminster, California, described as a superstore because of its size. The chain later added stores and expanded rapidly after becoming publicly traded in 1984, including a major move into Texas. By December 1984 it operated 25 stores; by 1985, 40 stores across California, Texas, and Arizona. Its headquarters were in City of Commerce, California, and later Sunnyvale. Known for humorous television advertising featuring Shadoe Stevens as Fred R. Rated, Federated Group reached 67 stores by 1987, when it was the fourth-largest U.S. consumer electronics discounter. It was sold in 1987 for US$67.3 million. In 1989, 26 stores in Los Angeles and San Diego were sold to Silo; the remaining stores held liquidation sales and closed in 1990. The former Federated locations reopened under the Silo name that year. Silo later closed some of those stores in 1994 and shut all its locations after filing for bankruptcy in 1995.

12" × 6"

Width, in

12.00

Height , in

6.00

Product features

- Durable 100% aluminum construction with silver backing

- High-definition, vibrant color printing on white front

- Standard size 12" × 6" (30.5 × 15.2 cm)

- Four pre-drilled holes for easy hanging or mounting

- Assembled in the USA from globally sourced parts (mounting hardware not included)

Care instructions

- Wipe with a damp cloth, air dry or use a soft, non-abrasive cloth
