fedmart-ceramic-ornament
FedMart Ceramic Ornament
GhostCorp Apparel - resurrecting iconic corporate ghosts.

Mark a special season with a tribute to FedMart’s place in regional retail history. The company opened its first store in San Diego in 1954 and expanded across California and the Southwest, changing with shoppers’ needs as membership requirements ended and new departments appeared. Though the chain closed in 1982, its stores and their later reuse remain part of many communities’ stories. This ornament makes a meaningful keepsake for former customers, local-history enthusiasts, and collectors of American retail memories.

FedMart began in 1954 in San Diego, California, when attorney Sol Price opened a discount store in an inherited warehouse at 2380 Main Street. Initially open to government employees through a family membership, it sold a mix of jewelry, furniture, and liquor and took in $4.5 million in its first year. A second store opened in Phoenix, Arizona, in 1955, followed by one in San Antonio, Texas; the chain later expanded across California and the Southwest. In the 1960s, FedMart dropped membership requirements and added food, wholesale-priced gasoline, pharmacies, and optical departments. It became publicly traded on the American Stock Exchange in 1969. In 1975, German businessman Hugo Mann gained control of the company, and Price left his leadership role the next year. FedMart expanded through leases and acquisitions, including the West Coast division of Two Guys in 1977 and Globe Store in 1978. With about 70 stores by 1979, the chain later began losing money. Mann took it private in 1981, and FedMart closed in 1982. Target leased 35 former locations, while the remaining sites went to Ralphs or other retail operators. Some former stores continued under new ownership, and the company changed its name to Sunbelt Realty.

Heart

Round

Diameter, in

3.21

2.80

Product features

- 100% white ceramic construction — strong and durable

- Double-sided print with matte finish option

- Golden hanging string included

- UV-decorated for lasting color

- Available in white or gold gift packaging (single ornament per pack)

Care instructions

- Use a microfiber cloth to gently remove any dust or dirt build-up.
