fedmart-square-porcelain-fridge-magnet
FedMart Square Porcelain Fridge Magnet
GhostCorp Apparel - resurrecting iconic corporate ghosts.

Keep FedMart's story close with a square porcelain fridge magnet celebrating a memorable name in regional retail. Founded in San Diego in 1954, the chain grew from a warehouse store into a Southwest presence, adding new departments as its approach to discount shopping evolved. FedMart closed in 1982, yet its former locations and lasting collector interest keep its history in view. This compact keepsake is a thoughtful choice for former shoppers, retail history enthusiasts, and anyone collecting reminders of hometown stores.

FedMart began in 1954 in San Diego, California, when attorney Sol Price opened a discount store in an inherited warehouse at 2380 Main Street. Initially open to government employees through a family membership, it sold a mix of jewelry, furniture, and liquor and took in $4.5 million in its first year. A second store opened in Phoenix, Arizona, in 1955, followed by one in San Antonio, Texas; the chain later expanded across California and the Southwest. In the 1960s, FedMart dropped membership requirements and added food, wholesale-priced gasoline, pharmacies, and optical departments. It became publicly traded on the American Stock Exchange in 1969. In 1975, German businessman Hugo Mann gained control of the company, and Price left his leadership role the next year. FedMart expanded through leases and acquisitions, including the West Coast division of Two Guys in 1977 and Globe Store in 1978. With about 70 stores by 1979, the chain later began losing money. Mann took it private in 1981, and FedMart closed in 1982. Target leased 35 former locations, while the remaining sites went to Ralphs or other retail operators. Some former stores continued under new ownership, and the company changed its name to Sunbelt Realty.

2" x 2"

Width, in

2.00

Height, in

2.00

Depth, in

0.25

Product features

- 2" square porcelain tile with glossy finish

- Superior coating for bright, true-to-design color reproduction

- Vibrant, crisp printing using modern techniques

- Strong magnet mounted on the backside for secure hold

- Durable glossy surface that highlights fine details and contrasts

Care instructions

- Gently wipe the dirt or dust off with a clean, dry microfiber cloth
