Its premier train, the Empire Builder, was introduced in 1929 in honor of Hill. On March 2, 1970, Great Northern merged with Northern Pacific, Chicago, Burlington and Quincy, and Spokane, Portland and Seattle to create Burlington Northern Railroad.
