Its main line ran from Saint Paul, Minnesota, to Seattle, Washington, becoming the northernmost transcontinental railroad in the United States. The route crossed Marias Pass in Montana and reached Seattle in 1893. Great Northern promoted settlement and Glacier National Park, while serving communities and resource industries across the northern states. Its premier train, the Empire Builder, was introduced in 1929 in honor of Hill. On March 2, 1970, Great Northern merged with Northern Pacific, Chicago, Burlington and Quincy, and Spokane, Portland and Seattle to create Burlington Northern Railroad.
