Conceived by former Tandy CEO John V. Roach, it was launched as a joint venture between Tandy Corporation and Trans World Entertainment after growth had stalled at Tandy's smaller electronics retail operations and personal computer business. The first two stores opened in Arlington, Texas, and Wilsonville, Oregon. Built as very large destination stores, a typical location combined about 185,000 square feet of sales floor and warehouse space and carried roughly 85,000 items. The concept used theme-park-inspired internal language, calling departments scenes, workers cast members, shoppers guests, and uniforms costumes. Stores centered on a rotunda with demonstrations and presentations, with electronics, computers, software, music, video, and accessory departments around it. Rapid expansion added 15 stores through 1996, but high operating costs and stronger competition hurt profitability. Six consistently profitable locations were sold to Fry's Electronics in 1996; the remaining chain closed or was sold between 1996 and
