The chain was owned by Mercantile Stores for most of its existence, with most locations in South Carolina and others in Augusta and Savannah. The chain left its longtime downtown flagship in 1978 for a new store at Regency Mall. In 1990, a Savannah location opened at Savannah Mall. J. B. White moved its last flagship to Augusta Mall in 1998, shortly before Mercantile Stores was sold to Dillard’s for $2.9 billion. Most J. B. White locations became Dillard’s stores; some in overlapping areas became Belk.
