Fields passport cover. The chain started with Enterprise Stores in Massachusetts and grew into an East Coast department store presence, reaching from Maine to Florida. Its story includes family leadership, a partnership with Food Fair, and a distinctive format that brought grocery and department store shopping together. A thoughtful travel companion for former shoppers and collectors who enjoy the history of familiar stores and changing communities.

J.M. Fields was a discount department store chain based in Salem, Massachusetts. Its roots went back to Enterprise Stores, an early-1900s business founded by Massachusetts partners Phillip Feldman and Samuel Glass. In the early 1950s, Feldman’s son Joseph M. Feldman took over the stores with Hy Glass and George Glass. Joseph chose the J.M. Fields name to avoid an association with any political, cultural, religious, or national identity. The partners pursued expansion, and by 1961 the chain had about fifty stores. Food Fair Corporation purchased the growing business that year. J.M. Fields expanded from New England along the eastern seaboard, from Maine to Florida. Many newer stores were built beside Food Fair grocery stores, with interior connections that let shoppers move between the two without going outside. The department stores offered clothing, housewares, sporting goods, electronics, and lawn and garden merchandise; some locations also had separate automotive centers. In 1965, the home office moved from Boston to Food Fair’s headquarters in Philadelphia. When Food Fair filed for bankruptcy in 1978, J.M. Fields stores closed. Former locations in the Northeast later became Kmart, Jefferson Ward, and Caldor stores, while many Southern locations were taken over by Kmart.

3.9" x 5.8"

Height, in

5.79

Width (Closed), in

3.94

Width (Open), in

8.03

Depth, in

0.39

Product features

- Two card slots plus pockets for boarding passes or IDs

- Cruelty-free black PU faux leather exterior

- RFID-blocking lining to protect against skimming

- One-size fits most passports (3.9″ × 5.8″)

- Vibrant front-cover print with potential edge fading on darker solids

Care instructions

- Wipe with a damp cloth, air dry or use a soft, non-abrasive cloth
