Retail sales grew in importance as more homeowners took on painting projects. After Moore retired in 1984, Joseph P. Cristiano became chief executive in January 1985. The company expanded through acquisitions, including Seattle's Preservative Paint Co. in 1994, K-M Universal in 1995, the paint division of Guam-based Island Equipment Co. in 1996, and Ponderosa Paint Manufacturing in 2000. An employee stock ownership plan was established in 1998. Manufacturing moved from the San Francisco Bay Area to Hurst, Texas, in 2017, while headquarters moved to Irving, Texas, in 2023. Following a 2022 acquisition by Flacks Group, operations ended in 2024 apart from filling existing orders.
