Banks Kerr founded the company in 1951 after graduating as valedictorian from the University of North Carolina School of Pharmacy. Its first store opened at University Mall in Chapel Hill. In January 1995, Thrift Drug, then owned by JCPenney, acquired Kerr's 97-store chain. During JCPenney's attempted acquisition of Eckerd Drug, federal regulators required 161 stores in North Carolina and South Carolina to be divested. Those stores were acquired by New Kerr Drug, an entity owned by Thrift's former president. The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Pharmacy dedicated Banks D. Kerr Hall in 2002. In 2009, Kerr sold 11 Charleston-area stores to CVS and refocused on North Carolina. That year it introduced Naturally Kerr formats in Raleigh and Asheville.
