In 1918, Klopfenstein and Edward Mason opened a new men's store at 936 Pacific; after Klopfenstein bought out Mason in 1925, it became known as Klopfenstein's. The business opened in downtown Seattle in 1924 and later moved to Fourth Avenue. In 1939, a new Fourth Avenue store opened, and ownership passed from Clarence to his son Hugh. The retailer expanded into shopping centers, with locations including Northgate Mall in 1950, Lloyd Center in Oregon in 1960, Aurora Village in 1962, and Tacoma Mall in 1965. After merging with Seattle retailer Leslie-Hughes in 1966, it moved in 1967 to a large store at Sixth Avenue and Pine Street. Hartmarx acquired the company in 1968 and expanded its stores in the region and Alaska. The Seattle flagship moved to Two Union Square in 1989.
