In 1972, Batus Inc., the U.S. retail division of British American Tobacco Company, bought a controlling interest in Kohl's Corporation, which then operated 50 grocery stores along with department, drug, and liquor stores. Members of the Kohl family, including Allen and Herb Kohl, continued to manage the company; Herb left management in 1979. In 1983, the grocery stores were sold to The Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company (A\u0026amp;P), and operated first as Kohl's Food Store and later as Kohl's Food Emporium. In February 2003, A\u0026amp;P put the stores up for sale as part of a debt-reduction effort. That year, A\u0026amp;P closed all Kohl's Food Stores locations.
