It introduced the widebody DC-10 in 1972 and launched Skytrain, its scheduled Gatwick–New York service, on 26 September 1977. Later routes included Los Angeles and Miami; the airline also operated from Berlin Tegel and briefly flew scheduled service between Manchester and Zürich. Laker pursued other international routes and a wider European low-fare network, but several proposals did not proceed. During the early 1980s recession, financial pressures and competition weakened the business. Laker Airways operated its last flight on 5 February 1982 and went bankrupt.
