Loveman's Dry Goods Emporium, the business began at 1915 Second Avenue. Moses V. Joseph joined soon afterward, and the name became Loveman \u0026amp; Joseph; with Emil Loeb's addition in 1889, it became Loveman, Joseph \u0026amp; Loeb. The main store opened in 1890 at 200 19th Street, at 3rd Avenue North, and was expanded in 1899. An annex followed in 1917. In 1923, the firm joined the City Stores Company syndicate with a Memphis retailer and a New Orleans retailer. A major fire destroyed the department store on March 10, 1934, but the annex exterior survived. The company reopened temporarily, then completed a replacement building on the site in 1935. Its corner clock became a local landmark; the store was among the nation's early air-conditioned department stores and the first in Alabama with an escalator. Suburban growth included Montgomery in 1954, Huntsville in 1966, Bessemer in 1969, Fairfield in 1970, and Birmingham's Century Plaza in 1976. City Stores filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in July 1979; liquidation followed, and the downtown flagship closed in April 1980.
