Founded by Ermal Marsh in Muncie in 1931, the company became a regional fixture across central Indiana and western Ohio. Its history includes an early move into Ohio, the O’Malia’s acquisition, and a Troy store that introduced barcode scanning to grocery shopping in 1974. A spirited collectible for former Marsh shoppers, regional retail enthusiasts, and anyone with fond memories of local stores.

Founded by Ermal Marsh in Muncie, Indiana, in 1931, Marsh grew from a single store into a regional grocery chain. It went public in 1953, the year it operated 16 Marsh stores, and opened its first Ohio store in Van Wert in 1956. After Ermal’s death in 1959, his brother Estel became president. The business adopted the name Marsh Supermarkets in 1960; Don Marsh became president in 1968. In 1974, a Troy, Ohio, Marsh store became the first grocery store in the world to use a barcode scanner. The company acquired O’Malia’s Food Markets in 2001 and later converted three Mr. D’s stores to that banner. Sun Capital Partners acquired Marsh in 2006, taking it private, and separated Village Pantry convenience stores in 2007. Marsh filed for bankruptcy in May 2017 and was liquidated. Kroger subsidiary Topvalco acquired 11 stores, while Fresh Encounter acquired 15. Fresh Encounter rebranded 14 as Needler’s Fresh Market and one in Van Wert as Chief Supermarket. The remaining stores closed by July 2017, ending Marsh’s operations.

12" × 6"

Width, in

12.00

Height , in

6.00

Product features

- Durable 100% aluminum construction with silver backing

- High-definition, vibrant color printing on white front

- Standard size 12" × 6" (30.5 × 15.2 cm)

- Four pre-drilled holes for easy hanging or mounting

- Assembled in the USA from globally sourced parts (mounting hardware not included)

Care instructions

- Wipe with a damp cloth, air dry or use a soft, non-abrasive cloth
