Mays competed with other discount retailers and higher-end department stores; a proposed merger with two discount competitors did not happen. After losing market share in the late 1970s, the company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 1982 and closed five stores outside New York City. In 1987 it closed one of its two Glen Oaks stores. The chain announced the immediate closure of its last three stores on December 28, 1988, with final sales on December 31. On January 1, 1989, J.W.
