The company grew through acquisitions across Ohio and into Kentucky, Indiana, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Missouri, Florida, Illinois, and Wisconsin. Major transactions included Integra Financial Corporation in 1996, First of America in 1998, and Provident Financial Group in 2004. The corporation offered commercial and retail banking, mortgage services, consumer finance, and asset management; its subsidiary National City Mortgage was credited with making the first mortgage in America. In 2007 it ranked 188th on the Fortune 500 and reported about $140 billion in assets. PNC announced its purchase on October 24, 2008, and completed the acquisition on December 31.
