Based in Fort Lauderdale, the low-fare carrier expanded quickly: by the end of 1983 it served eleven cities in eight states, using Boeing 727s and DC-8s. In 1984 it added Airbus A300 widebodies and operated routes linking northeastern and Florida cities with destinations including New Orleans and Los Angeles. That summer its network reached seventeen cities in ten states, and New Orleans served as a small hub. Rapid growth proved unprofitable. After an attempted lease of ten Boeing 727s from bankrupt Braniff International Airways was blocked in December 1984, Northeastern cut routes and filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on January 8, 1985. Three aircraft were repossessed in March. JEI Airlines acquired the downsized carrier in August 1985, when it served New York, Philadelphia, St. Petersburg and Fort Lauderdale.
