The line reached Fargo in 1872 and the upper Missouri River at Edwinton, later Bismarck, in 1873. After financial crises and reorganizations, the transcontinental main line was completed in Montana Territory on September 8, 1883, when former President Ulysses S. Grant drove the ceremonial Last Spike. Headquartered first in Brainerd and later Saint Paul, Minnesota, the railway served the northern West with freight, passengers, and land sales. Its flagship was the North Coast Limited. Northern Pacific operated until 1970, when it merged with other lines to form Burlington Northern Railroad.
