Over the following decade, 17 more locations opened in the Chicago metropolitan area, and the chain also entered Northwest Indiana in 1991 with a store in Schererville. In October 1997, Dominick's announced that Omni stores would be converted to its Fresh format, citing weaker performance than its other stores. The Schererville location became a Dominick's in 1997 and closed in 1999. Dominick's was purchased by Safeway in 1998; the Fresh concept was later eliminated and some underperforming stores closed. The Hammond, Indiana, location opened as a Dominick's in January 1999 and shut seven months later. The Omni name also appeared on organic store-brand foods at Dominick's and other Safeway stores.
