Established in January 1996 as Piedmont Aviation Svcs d\/b\/a Pace Airlines, it received Federal Aviation Administration and U.S. Department of Transportation approval on March 26, 1996. Its initial focus was executive charters for sports teams, entertainers, and corporations, using an all-first-class Boeing 737-200. Piedmont Aviation Services merged with Hawthorne Aviation in July 1998 to become Piedmont Hawthorne Aviation. In 2000, new president Darrell Richardson expanded operations, including a Vacation Express leisure charter contract that began flying in 2001. Pace was sold to Pace Airlines, LLC and Pace Airlines II, LLC in December 2002; later that month, Robert H. Brooks purchased it and established the Hooters Air brand. Hooters Air began service in April 2003, while Pace retained operational and maintenance activity largely in Winston-Salem and the Hooters Air offices were in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
