Its regional roots reached back to the Sunset Telephone-Telegraph Company, which opened in Seattle on March 7, 1883, with 90 subscribers. Sunset became the Sunset Telephone and Telegraph Company in 1899 and merged into Pacific Telephone and Telegraph in 1917. Pacific Telephone Northwest was created as a division on February 1, 1960, and Pacific Northwest Bell was incorporated on March 27, 1961. After Washington Public Service Commission approval on June 5, the separation took effect at midnight on July 1, 1961.
