Sunset became the Sunset Telephone and Telegraph Company in 1899 and merged into Pacific Telephone and Telegraph in 1917. Pacific Telephone Northwest was created as a division on February 1, 1960, and Pacific Northwest Bell was incorporated on March 27, 1961. After Washington Public Service Commission approval on June 5, the separation took effect at midnight on July 1, 1961. Its operating identity shifted to US West Communications in 1988, while legal consolidation followed in 1991.
