The business began on Congress Street and, with two employees, leased premises there in May 1881. A member of the Boston Stock Exchange, it acquired a seat on the New York Stock Exchange in 1890. In June 1942, following the difficult years of the Great Depression, Jackson \u0026amp; Curtis merged with fellow Boston brokerage Paine \u0026amp; Webber. The combined Paine, Webber, Jackson \u0026amp; Curtis operated 22 branch offices and became a significant participant in the New England financial market. Known as Paine Webber Jackson \u0026amp; Curtis, the firm moved its headquarters from Boston to New York in 1963. Its holding company, PaineWebber Inc., was incorporated in 1970 and went public on the New York Stock Exchange in 1974. The business acquired Mitchell Hutchins in 1977 and Blyth, Eastman Dillon \u0026amp; Co. in 1979.
