Authorization arrived January 1, 1948, and Piedmont's first scheduled flight traveled from Wilmington, North Carolina, to Cincinnati on February 20, using a Douglas DC-3. The carrier expanded from its early southeastern routes into a broad eastern and national network, adding jets in 1967 and developing a major hub at Charlotte\/Douglas International Airport after deregulation. Piedmont acquired Utica-based Empire Airlines in 1985, adding routes and Fokker F28 aircraft. By 1989 it had hubs in Baltimore, Charlotte, Dayton, and Syracuse, and operated Boeing 767-200ER service from Charlotte to London Gatwick. USAir, formerly Allegheny Airlines, absorbed Piedmont on August 5, 1989.
