Renamed Rax Restaurants Inc. in 1982, the chain grew past 221 restaurants in 25 states and reached 504 locations in 38 states during the 1980s. After menu and format changes, a 1991 management buyout, and a 1992 bankruptcy, the company merged with Franchise Enterprises Inc. in 1994 as Heartland Food Systems. It returned to the Rax Restaurants name in 1996. Cassady \u0026amp; Associates acquired the brand in 1997, and Rich Donohue purchased the Rax trademark in 2007.
