Northwest Orient Airlines announced its purchase of Republic on January 23, 1986; the $884 million merger was completed October 1. Northwest dropped Orient from its name and incorporated Republic’s hubs into its domestic network. Northwest later merged with Delta Air Lines, with Delta becoming the surviving carrier in January 2010.
