In 2005, an affiliate of Sun Capital Partners acquired Shopko and returned it to private ownership. The company adopted the Shopko name in 2007, while smaller Shopko Express pharmacies and Hometown stores broadened its formats. Shopko filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on January 16, 2019, and announced that March that it would close its remaining stores. Most retail operations ended by June 23, 2019.
