During the early and middle 1990s, it became a prominent sponsor of New York-area teams including the Yankees, Knicks, Mets, Nets, Rangers, Devils, and Islanders, while also sponsoring the Orioles, Flyers, Whalers, and Canadiens. Following a rapid expansion from about 20 locations to more than 80 in under a year, the company filed for bankruptcy in 1998 and Cablevision bought it for $80 million. At its peak, the retailer had 94 stores, 2,000 employees, and $1.4 billion in revenue across five states, plus music-only stores in Maryland and the Washington, D.C. area. Cablevision later dropped the slogan, and the chain closed permanently in 2003. Marvin Jemal subsequently opened The Zone in several former Wiz sites; P.C.
