Growth accelerated in 1987 when Uptons acquired 14 stores from Meyers-Arnold of Greenville, South Carolina. The chain later expanded again through the 1996 acquisition of 37 locations from the Florida-based J. Byrons department store chain. In 1997, Uptons moved its headquarters from Norcross, a suburb of metropolitan Atlanta, to the nearby Peachtree Corners area in Technology Park Atlanta. Stores operated in Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia. In July 1999, owner American Retail Group concluded that continuing the chain was too costly.
