The company opened its first supermarket in Flushing, Queens, in 1951, went public in 1961 while the family retained majority ownership, and reached 25 stores and $80 million in sales that year. Waldbaum's acquired the Food Mart chain in Connecticut and Massachusetts in 1970. At its 1980s peak, it ranked as the United States' 12th-largest supermarket chain, with 140 New York metropolitan area stores. In November 1986, The Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company acquired controlling interest, while the Waldbaum family continued managing the stores. After A\u0026amp;P's 2015 bankruptcy, locations were sold to Stop \u0026amp; Shop, Key Food, Best Yet Market, Wakefern Food Corporation, and other operators. All Waldbaum's stores were sold or closed by November 2015.
