It began as the Washington National Building Loan and Investment Association on September 25, 1889, after the Great Seattle Fire, and made its first West Coast home mortgage loan on February 10, 1890. The organization adopted the Washington Mutual Savings Bank name in 1917, demutualized in 1983, and reorganized as a holding company in 1994. During its expansion, it acquired or combined with businesses including Murphey Favre, Western Bank, American Savings Bank, Great Western, Home Savings of America, Bank United, Dime Bancorp, Providian and several mortgage companies.
