The organization adopted the Washington Mutual Savings Bank name in 1917, demutualized in 1983, and reorganized as a holding company in 1994. During its expansion, it acquired or combined with businesses including Murphey Favre, Western Bank, American Savings Bank, Great Western, Home Savings of America, Bank United, Dime Bancorp, Providian and several mortgage companies.
