Watt, Gilbert Thompson, and James Shand. The store sold foreign and domestic dry goods, upscale merchandise, and famously began with a $5 wool plaid shawl. After Thompson died during the first year, Watt and Shand renamed the business Watt, Shand and Company. The store moved to 8-10 East King Street in 1880, shortened its name to Watt \u0026amp; Shand in 1885, and expanded into 6 East King Street. A ladies' ready-to-wear department was added in 1889. Expansion continued through acquisitions, including buildings at 23 Penn Square in 1905, Appel \u0026amp; Weber jewelry in 1959, and Hager's Department Store in 1968. A Park City Center location opened in 1970. The downtown store completed a three-year renovation in 1984, but the business was purchased by The Bon-Ton in 1992. The downtown location closed in March 1995.
